MD Web Hosting just keep making it easier for me. Today I login to find my permissions have been changed on the server so the plugins that were working before now no longer work.

Now I have not changed any thing I have added no new plugins all these plugins work on my other servers it just happens to be MD Web Hosting that is having a problem. I am not even going to waste my time contacting them as this site I really don’t care for and its just to warn other webmasters that MD Web Hosting could be a real problem for them and their sites.

This is how unreliable this server that the server that this website is hosted on is. Check out the dates and some of the times. The Database was was out on the 3rd July for 2 1/2 hours. I mean even to reboot the server should only take them 5 minutes at the most. It barely goes 1 full day without crashing and that’s just the database errors. I am lucky that this site is not my main source of income, having this site down for those periods of times and for so many periods of times sometimes 4 times in 1 day it crashes. My other servers will go weeks without having any log errors like that. The following is just a 48 hour period. I have attached the full log so you can see how absolutely useless this server is.

Now you might say hey this is the scripts problem. Well I run this exact same wordpress setup, the same version, the exact same version plugins, the exact same theme, on other servers and have none of these problems.

That is just off of one site. I had never seen that site until 2 days ago when I did the search I should have done before taking an account with MD Web Hosting.

You can go on to read much much more from that Whirlpool Thread which was started in February 2008 unfortunately too late for me as I had already been a customer at that stage. That is just from 2 entries I found in google I could go on with the list. But I will leave that for another Post. I hope you can see that I am by no means the only person suffering from MD Web Hostings bad performance.

I have moved the 3 sites off the new Orion Server which was supposed to be more reliable than the old server I was on. But as a pinch of irony I have left this site on their server. You will probably not be able to see this post as the server is highly unreliable and falls over every few hours. I was wondering, seeing that I have paid for a year in advance, if they removed this site. I checked their policy and also checked it with my lawyer and this site contains nothing that could be deemed in breaking their policy for site hosting. So it would be un professional of them to remove it from their server. Time will tell.

As you will see from the logs I have kept from their support system. You can expect that MD Web Hosting will not answer your calls to their support line or answer their live help system. Of all the phones calls I have made to them and the time waiting on their live help I think I have wasted 1 full day of my life. They have answered once in all that time and then I was only waiting for about 25 minutes (and all they told me was to lodge a support ticket).

My journey with this so called hosting company began on the 25/11/2007 I was looking for an Australian Hosting company that was cheaper than my current hosting company. I took advantage of MD half price sale and grabbed the Dingo Hosting Package (1 yr, free domain offer) it cost me $59.40 AUD/Year which for what I was paying seemed a reasonable amount. The package seemed decent enough 5gig of Website Storage, 10Gig of monthly data, 20 MySQL Databases, 2 Addon Domains. I had 2 fairly large sites a Font Site around 600meg and Games Site around 1.5gig along with another Smaller Website that I wanted to put on an Aussie IP and keep it off my other aussie IP’s.

So I ended using about 3.3 gig of space and 6 MySQL db’s along with using about 2.5gig of bandwidth per month. So you can see there was nothing startling about the website. Not massive traffic magnets only around 20,000 uniques per month between the 3.

I have around 750 websites allup hosted on different accounts, some are on my own dedicated servers and others are on hosting accounts and reseller accounts. I have the servers in Australia/UK/USA/South Africa mainly to do with traffic from google for the individual websites.

My monthly bill for my servers runs up to around 500 usd per month so I am always on the lookout for cheaper packages while obviously I want to have some reliability as well. If my sites are offline or not working then I am not making money.

So on the MD Web Hosting package I put the 3 sites none of them being monetized yet as I like to build a sites user base up first before scaring people off with adverts. While they were larger sites they were heavy workloads as they were being built up.

My first problem with them come in the way the font script was written I could not run the .htaccess file on the server as part of the code for the mod_rewrite was being blocked by the php parser. Ok I thought well the script runs on other servers I will just have to modify it to work on MD’s package. I did this and while I was doing it I made a few modifications to the script to make it more search engine friendly. So while some could say it was the MD’s fault it could also be argued that it was the scripts fault as well (even though it works on other servers) So my time was also not really lost as I made the script much better in the long run.
